Jassiel Serna | Resident
Jassiel Serna is a Chicago-based artist whose work redefines the art of papier-mâché. Serna’s work challenges the standards of fine art, creating relic-like sculptures reminiscent of primitive art. His work explores themes of nature, culture, identity, politics, and religion. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from The American Academy of Art.
As an expression of a natural process, Serna creates relic-like sculptures with terra-cotta and stone-like finishes. Encapsulated within the landscapes are layers of Tajín and chamoy—an intentional way of making the sculptures distinctly Mexican, and a direct response to the diluted and commercialized versions of Mexican culture.
