Opening night Friday, September 11 through September 20 by appointment.

Please contact stacy@chicagoartdepartment.org for viewing.

Pine
pine = wood + design + craft + nostalgia

Chicago Art Department proudly presents the group show Pine, with artists Bridgette Buckley, Stacy Peterson and Sighn. The show will feature wood sculptures, paintings, text-based work, illustrations, lighting and textiles.

Bridgette Buckley negotiates the space between art, design and craft to create objects that are useful and pleasurable. She believes the objects we surround ourselves with should be active in our everyday lives, to evoke memories, help us imagine our future or bring us closer to natural or human-made craft.

Stacy Peterson’s illustrations, photos and paintings are full of architecture, design, childhood toys and family traditions. From the Milwaukee Art Museum to Swedish Horses to colors reminiscent of the 70’s, each pattern is a thought, a moment and a memory.

Sighn's painstakingly hand-carved sculptures deal with very emotive and expressive phrases that are rooted in deep nostalgia. His typography aims to access the roots and fundamentals of language, thereby achieving simple, graceful expressions of emotion.

We hope you can make it to our annual "Growing Up CAD" celebration/fundraiser on Saturday August 15th, but if not, please consider contributing to the ongoing growth of the CAD community. Your contributions will not only allow us to maintain the CAD brand of art, exhibitions, and art activities that you have come know and love, but to make the leap to the next phase of our growth: CAD 3.0.

Our campaign this year is to grow CAD membership or "residents". Over the next year we will be growing the number of resident artists from 8 to 20, and we would like to invite you to become a CAD Resident Patron. We appreciate any amount that you are able to contribute, but we hope that you consider becoming a resident patron for $200.

As a "resident patron" we want to formally recognize the role that you play in making new and emerging art happen in Chicago, but more importantly, we want to expand our idea of a "CAD resident" to invite greater participation and sense of ownership. At CAD, we strongly believe in never asking you to do anything that we would not do ourselves and $200 is what current CAD resident artists contribute - per month - to make CAD happen.

As a resident patron you could make the following things possible:

Maintaining our flagship location at 1837 S. Halsted - which has become a staple and regular stop in Pilsen.

The opening of "CAD West" - an expansion to a 2nd location in West Town, dedicated solely to studio space and the making of art. (This will also be the new location for future CAD classes)

Even more exhibitions - with the opening of CAD West, CAD Pilsen will shift its primary focus to exhibitions, expanding our events calendar beyond the usual '2nd Fridays'. Our goal is to simply be open more!

Upgrades, Upgrades, Upgrades - while our DIY aesthetic has always been a part of our charm, we would love to keep improving the space with things like repairing our walls, new lighting, and amenities.

Part-time/full-time administrative position - as we plan to grow, all of the behind the scenes work also grows. Our continued hope is at some point we can pay someone to do the support work of keeping everything running.

The beauty of CAD has always been that - while we try to define it with things like missions statements - the question of "what is CAD" has simply been an expression of the passions, ideas, and energy of the people involved.

By becoming a "resident patron" we want to invite you into that conversation.

Larry Schorr is sincere, down-to-earth and a kick-ass photographer! I had the privilege of hosting Larry at CAD for his show: The Wild, The Beautiful, The Damned.

"My first rock concert was April 27, 1969 at the Baltimore Civic Center with Frank Zappa and the Mothers, Country Joe and the Fish, Ten Years After, and the Buddy Miles Express. I tried taking some photos, but was much too far away and they came out badly. However, it made me realize what a thrilling, peak experience a live show provided to me, and I continued going to more and more gigs.

I kept going to shows and bringing my camera, and eventually came to the realization that if I got close enough to the stage, I could come up with some splendid images if I shot enough film. Through trial and error and intuition, I learned what to avoid and what to look for and how to work composition into what was going on on stage. I also learned how to hold a Nikon F with a 200mm lens as steady as possible while being in the midst of a heaving mass of humanity."
