Nick Elliott

Nick is a Chicago native who specializes in electronic mediums and generative processes.  He graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a degree in Digital Media Technology, and works as a web developer for an interactive agency.  He is also an electronic musician and has performed all over the Midwest for nearly a decade.  His digital work has been displayed at the [C]spaces gallery at Columbia College and at the Murphy Hill gallery.

By exploring nature through the lens of mathematics, Nick attempts to take a look at the rules behind the curtain of what makes the world take shape.  He translates these rules into computer code, then twists them into algorithms that create organic, but otherworldly visual systems and shapes.  Nick feels it is important to have a deep appreciation and wonder for the natural world, these explorations are a means of meditation and comprehension of that world combined with his own sense of self.

The motivation behind this work is in part driven by several questions: If humans are natural phenomenon, is our technology also natural?  Is nature a creation of a godlike figure, or is the universe itself God?  Can our world be understood to a degree that we can create worlds of equal detail ourselves, and if that understanding existed, would we care to create those worlds to begin with?

Nick will continue exploring these ideas both digitally and in the form of interactive lighting installations at the CAD West gallery, in addition to curating shows featuring like-minded artists.  Nick can be reached at nick@chicagoartdepartment.org, and at the following online locations:
