Chicago/New York-based architecture studio, Norman Kelley, designed the second installment of the CAD Street Canvas mural. “A Taxonomy of Pilsen Brickwork” is up now through August

Three Wall Drawings, Exterior Acrylic Latex Paint on Wood
141-1/4” x 109”, 140” x 109”, 144 – 1/4” x 109”

Three wall drawings are cropped and framed on the Halsted Avenue facade of the John York & Co. Building. The drawings stitch together a collection of approximately seventeen brickwork patterns from the surrounding Pilsen neighborhood. Conceived as a 1:1 architectural installation, the works combine Norman Kelley’s obsession with technique in drawing, projective geometry, and cunning vision. Look closely and explore the varying brick bond types, mortar joints, and misalignments that speak to the beauty of the existing context and its patchwork history. The mural will be up through August.

The firm’s work has been exhibited and published widely, most recently at the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial. Norman Kelley is the recipient of the 2014 Architectural League of NY Young Archi-tect’s Prize and their design work is currently represented by Volume Gallery.
