I don't get out of CAD as often as I should on 2nd Friday nights - but I do always make it a point to check out the the work at Rooms Gallery. Todd Frugia and Marrakesh Glasspool-Frugia present performance-based works that always are often "high-concept", address engaging subject matter, yet also very accessible, especially to those (like myself) who don't always have a ton of patience for performance.
Recently they had a performance called "Ring" in which audience members activated the performers by playing xylophone blocks posted on the walls of the gallery. A few months ago they performed a piece called "Seven Jewish Children: a play for gaza" - a piece where you sat at a long table with various characters telling what or what not to tell their jewish children about the conflict with Palestinians. There was also "Oracle" where you walked in to find a sculpture pile of fabric with only a mouth sticking out - speaking constantly for 3 hours.
Rooms embraces the challenge of presenting performance-based work in the context of a gallery - and appreciate how they feel like installations. With many of their pieces, I like being able to walk in at any time and experience the piece for as long or as little as I want to.
So next time you are down in Pilsen for a 2nd Friday make the extra effort to go past the highway and check out Rooms Gallery.
